Four types: fixed frame, roller, pleated, door
An insect screen is a simple product as long as the window is a single ordinary one. As soon as a balcony door, a roof window, a four-metre terrace portal or a cat enters the picture, there are ten options and the prices differ several times over. The difference lies not in the mesh — that is much the same everywhere — but in the frame and the way it opens.

For a window: a frame or a roller cassette
The fixed-frame screen — the reliable classic and the cheapest option. The S-130 profile is cold-rolled aluminium, the mesh is tensioned within the frame, and the clips are matched to the window type: overlapping, part-recessed, recessed and timber frames. It goes on and comes off without tools: take it down in autumn, put it back in spring — or leave it, since the profile is all-weather. Sizes run from 30 cm up to 220 × 220 cm. The Aluprof equivalent is MRS, with the profile in two versions (with a fin, or with a groove for a brush seal) plus MRSZ for aluminium windows where the sash sits flush with the frame.
The MZN roller cassette screen — for those who want neither to take a screen down nor to look at a frame. The mesh lives in an aluminium box above the window and pulls down in side guides, the ALU-CLICK mechanism holds it at any height, and an optional soft brake stops it snapping back up. The box mounts on the frame or inside a shutter recess and never clashes with the sash — the window opens and tilts as usual. Brush seals along the guides make it the best-sealing of the Aluprof roller systems. The one drawback is that it costs more than a fixed frame.
For a balcony door: hinged or sideways roller
A door is opened dozens of times a day, so a clip-on fixed-frame screen does not last there. The MOSKITO M-205 insect screen door — a proper hinged leaf: a reinforced profile with a cross rail, three self-closing hinges, magnetic catches and a handle. Up to 100 × 240 cm in a single leaf, with a double-leaf version for wide terraces. The favourite option among families with animals is a pet flap in the lower part of the mesh: the cat comes and goes and the door stays shut. Aluprof offers the hinged MRO, with a rounded profile, a self-closer and magnetic closing.
The MZP roller door — for when a hinged leaf has nowhere to swing: the mesh rolls sideways into a 60 × 60 mm cassette, a spring retracts it and it closes onto a magnetic strip without banging. Up to 1.2 × 2.3 m.
For a terrace or portal: pleated up to 6 metres
Terrace doors and lift-and-slide HS portals 3–6 metres wide can only be screened with a pleated system. The concertina mesh slides to one side and stops wherever you leave it — there is no need to open the whole screen just to step out onto the terrace. MPH Harmony — a single leaf up to 4 m; MPH Dual — two leaves closing on each other, up to 6 × 2.7 m, with a corner solution that needs no post for MB-77HS corner portals. The threshold is low, so neither children nor the robot vacuum trip over it. Pleated mesh is made only in black, since that is the least visible against the light; the profile comes in 12 standard colours plus any RAL to match the portal. For windows there is the vertical MPH Verti, which folds upwards, up to 230 × 200 cm, with individual tension adjustment on every cord.
If you want concealed mounting and slim profiles on expensive glazing, there is the Italian Genius: pleated GM17 (up to 240 × 260), GM22 (up to 240 × 300), the built-in GM31 for portals, and roller GS43 and GS67 — up to 460 × 320 cm with a chain or a 230 V motor.
The MPH Harmony pleated screen shares a guide rail with Aluprof external roller shutters (the PPMO 53 profile), and the MZN roller box fits inside the shutter recess. If you are planning both shutters and screens, put them on one order: the guide rails are shared.
Roof windows and non-standard shapes
On a sloping window an ordinary roller screen sags and pulls away from the frame. MZH — the MZN version for roof windows: the mesh is secured at the bottom with a hook, the bottom edge seals properly, and it mounts on windows with a drip flashing; it works with Velux, Fakro, Roto and their equivalents. The vertical MPH Verti pleated screen also suits roof-window frames. Arches and trapeziums are made to survey: a fixed-frame screen can be made to a template, a roller one cannot.
Mesh: standard, invisible, pet-resistant, anti-dust, PVC
- Standard — the ordinary mesh, in grey or black. Grey looks lighter indoors, while black is less visible against the light.
- Invisible (Clear View) — extremely fine threads, all but invisible on the window and taking almost no light. For picture windows and shopfronts.
- Cat-proof — a reinforced mesh built for claws: the cat hangs off it and the screen holds. Available in fixed frames, doors and MRS.
- Anti-dust — a fine weave that holds back pollen and street dust. For allergy sufferers and windows facing a road.
- Vandal-resistant PVC — a dense reinforced mesh for doors and ground floors.
Colour, installation and winter
The frame should not argue with the window: MOSKITO offers 11 profile colours (white, browns, anthracite, silver, black, timber effect and any RAL), the MZN roller system 19 colours including anodised and timber-effect finishes, and the pleated range 12 standard colours plus RAL. Fixed frames mount on clips or fins with no drilling into the sash; roller and pleated systems fix to the frame, into a recess or into the reveal with screws, following the Aluprof instructions. All of them can stay out over winter: aluminium profile is not troubled by frost, roller and pleated screens simply close into their box or stack, and a fixed frame can be taken down — or left where it is.
